Music May!

Monday, May 09, 2011

I thought this May was going to be mellow ("mellow as the month of May"!), but I was wrong. My calendar is quickly filling up with musical events, television appearances and the like and I couldn't be more excited. Music is my pulse.

Here are some songs I can't get enough of right now:

"Just A Kiss," Lady Antebellum
Lady A just released this single last week and it shot up the charts pretty quickly. I like it -- it's very Lady Antebellum. To me it actually sounds a slightly more somber version of "Need You Now", though it's actually about a more hopeful subject matter. It's got a very similar pace, and the first line of the first verse (and probably of the second verse as well) has the same sing-song up-down-up-down-up-down rhythm as "Need You Now." (I'm not a professional musician; there's probably a technical name for it other than something like "iambic pentameter".) Despite the similarities, I really like this song. Not as much as I liked "Need You Now," but it's the same Lady Antebellum and yet another song I find myself relating to. Can't wait for the new album ... whenever it's supposed to drop (wish I knew).

"Inside," Jordan Knight
Ah, the midtempo ballad. I was such a victim to these babies when I was a teenager. I have since removed myself from the grasp of the ballad/midtempo ballad, but this is still a good song. Mostly because, like "Just A Kiss," it so closely speaks to my life right now. Plus, there is hardly a Jordan Knight uptempo I've liked. I think Jordan's voice is much more suited for ballads and midtempos as this. I find "Inside" to sound kind of dated, like a song from the late '90s/early '00s rather than today (my goodness, that was over a decade ago, wasn't it?), but I ain't complaining. '90s pop music is my happy place.

And songs I like:

"Heart Skips A Beat," Lenka
This song, like the other two above, speak to my life right now. This isn't my favorite Lenka song, but it is undeniably happy!

"Just Another Dream," Cathy Dennis
Back to the '90s ... I stumbled across Cathy Dennis and her early '90s pop career when I was watching NKOTB videos. Cathy's established a remarkable career as a songwriter since this hit, but the song is just plain awesome. So much music from the late '80s and early '90s, I've found, is just irresistibly cheerful.

"For The First Time," The Script
I just heard this song for the first time (heh) last night. It, like so many songs, sounded better live on the radio, at a quarter to 2 in the morning with the mild May air floating in and out of my open window. This is just one of those melodies that reminds me of what it is to be alive, what it is to be young and of all the hope and joy of the late spring and early summer. Of course the lyrics aren't nearly so sweet, but I think of all The Script's songs I've heard thus far, this is the least Script-y and the most relevant for me. It's bittersweetly hopeful, sort of the way I feel every year about letting May go and June come forward, because I know once May is gone, the rest of the year will fly by.
