Summertime at Pinkberry

Sunday, May 29, 2011

Summer is here. Pinkberry has rolled out its summertime flavors, and that's how I know.

No, not really. This is the first time I've tried any of Pinkberry's seasonal flavors, actually, because I was so impressed by the Shake Shack's salted caramel frozen custard, I expected something spectacular when I heard Pinkberry was doing a salted caramel fro-yo.

Well, it's no Shake Shack ... even though it costs about the same. It basically tasted like a caramel square, salt forgotten. A little too sweet on its own, but good paired with the other seasonal flavor my friend and I chose, watermelon (which tasted more like strawberry to me, but who's keeping count?). A 60-40 ratio of caramel to watermelon made the perfect balance, though the differing textures made the experience a tad ... funky.

The texture of the "salted" caramel was icier than I'm used to from Pinkberry. It had the texture of a sherbet. I wouldn't go out of my way to get it again, but perhaps with some toppings or split with another flavor it would be more palatable?
