New York Diet

Sunday, July 03, 2011

So I was bored one day and started catching up on The New York Diet at NYMag.com ... and I was surprised at how outraged some people were at people's diets, or how incredulous some readers were. If the celebrity ate meager portions, they'd automatically call them anorexic. If they ate really unhealthy foods but weren't overweight, they were called bulimic. There really is no winning as a celebrity, I guess!

Anyway, I decided to track my eating for 7 days. My results aren't remotely as interesting as any of the celebrities (mostly because I don't eat out as often), but I have realized that I am a disgustingly unhealthy eater.

Saturday night at Dallas BBQ, one of my happy places.

Sunday, June 26
Running late, couldn't make it to Dunkin Donuts, so went to Tim Hortons instead and ordered my first-ever iced latte from there. It was pretty delicious. That filled me up until lunchtime, which was fried rice -- egg, peas, brown rice, tons of pepper and a little onion.

Afternoon snack out of the vending machine. I always hope for something good, but it's always the same crap. I really want chips, but the mini packs of chips are 80% air and about 12 chips, so I get my usual -- White Cheddar Cheez-Its.

Dinner ... I wasn't too hungry, after having had the Cheez-Its only two-and-a-half hours before. Had some cantaloupe and a cooked egg yolk and one chicken nugget. And 5 Romano garlic sourdough twists from Archer Farms. A small peach, 2 more nuggets and 2 slices of raw zucchini. I tend to graze a lot when I'm at home. A handful of candy from the candy bag I made at the Christmas in June party. Very healthy.

Then a handful of those Black Forest "tropical" fruit snacks. Oh dear, this isn't going to be good.

Monday, June 27
Breakfast was a medium iced butter caramel (couldn't taste the caramel at all) coffee from Tim Hortons. I always bring instant oatmeal but I think I'm in a breakfast rut because I can't bring myself to make and eat it anymore. Not a particularly light breakfast for the summertime, either. Lunch was a wrap made out of those chicken nuggets from last night, with a few zucchini slices and lettuce and mustard.

Had a handful of dark chocolate Chex Mix and a medium Coke from Wendy's.

Dinner was curry chicken and veggies over brown rice. Had a peach and 3 Lindt milk chocolate truffles for dessert. And then a handful of Black Forest fruit snacks. This is relatively good for me.

Tuesday, June 28
Breakfast, again, was coffee. I need to start eating breakfast, I really do. This time it was a large hot vanilla spice from Dunkin Donuts. Lunch was linguine with Trader Joe's turkey meatballs (SO delicious and fluffy and HUGE), pomodoro sauce and some onions and stuff. You know.

I had a chocolate munchkin from Dunkin Donuts that my co-worker gave me sometime in between.

For dinner, met up with a friend at Southern Hospitality. Was kind of afraid because I'd heard terrible things about it. I ordered the chicken and waffles -- it was actually really good. My friend's pulled pork sandwich was dry. We shared the Mississippi Mud Pie -- my first -- which was really nothing to write home about. At all.

Wednesday, June 29
Had some eggs scrambled with onion, red pepper, mushrooms. And a very small coffee flavored with Creme Brulee creamer.

Lunch was linguine with pomodoro sauce, turkey meatballs like yesterday. A peppermint-flavored salt water taffy and a few of those tropical fruit gummies.

Went to Panera for dinner -- had the chicken cobb salad, which was significantly worse than the last two times I'd had it. I recall it having corn and other yummies, but they didn't even have proper chicken tonight. Fail. It was overly salty. Had a frozen strawberry lemonade with this, which was good.

Then had some Postobon apple flavored soda I picked up at Target as a sweet ending to the day.

Thursday, June 30
Two slices of whole wheat toast with Nutella and some coffee for brunch.

3 Lindt truffles, a cup of Postobon apple and a handful of potato chips. Oh so healthy so far today.

Dinner was about 4 ounces of steak, caramelized onions, corn on the cob ... another cup of Postobon apple (the novelty's starting to wear off; I just want to finish the bottle) and 2 peaches. Am so full. Remind me not to eat anything else for the rest of the night.

Had a O.N.E. Coconut Water before bed.

Friday, July 1
Medium Vanilla Spice coffee with milk and sugar from Dunkin Donuts. This is my regular. Finally forced myself to have a packet of oatmeal, Cinnamon and Spice.

Lunch was more linguine with turkey meatballs and pomodoro. A banana as a snack.

Dinner was 4 oz of steak eaten as a hamburger, some popcorn flavored with white cheddar seasoning and a cup of Postobon apple.

Saturday, July 2
Had my first-ever vanilla latte at Starbucks! Think it's overrated. Had an apple for breakfast.

Was about to faint from really not eating anything and too much caffeine (I'm a coffee lightweight -- my friends call my coffee "milk with coffee") and really did not want the ramen I brought. So naturally, I went to Wendy's and I tried out the half-salad and side combo, which turned out to be a DEAL. I got the Baja half salad (so yummy ... lettuce with pico de gallo and guacamole and cheese with a side of chili, so it was like I was getting TWO sides for the price of one) and a sour cream and chive baked potato. See, I'm making an effort to eat healthier, even if it's still at Wendy's. It was too much food -- I had the potato and the salad but not the chili.

Met up with a friend for drinks -- had a glass of rosé, then met up with yet more friends at Dallas BBQ, one of my non-guilty guilty pleasures. I love the place and don't deny it. Had some hot wings, some Southern fried chicken tenders, some ribs, some fries, some spinach salad, and a big ole pina colada. Yes sir.

So after whatever barbecue food I eat tomorrow, I think I'm going to calm down a little, maybe go veggie for a week or two. Ha.
