Live blog: The X Factor USA premiere

After watching the last season of The X Factor (UK), I fell in love with the boys of One Direction ... and now the show's crossed the pond and debuting tonight in the U.S.!

The premise of the show is a little different from its American Idol-like peers: the contestants are split up into various categories and paired with a celebrity mentor. The production value of The X Factor is greater than that of American Idol -- every performance, every week on The X Factor is treated like the finale. Contestants really try to give you a full picture of what it would be like at one of their concerts. And the stakes, in this case, are really high ... the winner will receive a $5 million record contract. That was enough for my friend Ellen and me to consider auditioning ... the operative word being "consider."

I'm not sure the U.S. version will be identical to the UK version in that sense, but one should hope that it's close, because the last thing the U.S. needs is another American Idol.

Liveblogging The X Factor USA tonight with my friend Ellen ... hopefully it's worth the watch.
