Live blog: The X Factor Live Shows, Show 1

Tuesday, October 25, 2011

First live show of "X Factor USA" was ... drama-laden. Mostly between the judges, and most surprisingly, between Nicole and Simon.

No big surprises among who went home tonight.

Read on for the live blog. In reverse chronological order because I'm an idiot, sorry.

10:28pm
So the girls are down to a 13-year-old, a 14-year-old and a 19-year-old. I've predicted virtually every "loser" tonight ... is that a good or bad thing?

10:27pm
That means Simone and Tiah are going home. Unless he's going to be a real a-hole about it!

10:26pm
Simon really likes Drew, yay. Part of me thinks he's gonna save Simone because he's been so stubborn about her.

10:25pm
I'm guessing Tiah and Simone are going home. Mayyybe Rachel, but probably Tiah and Simone.

10:24pm
I know why Melanie's crying, but Nicole, why?

10:21pm
Melanie seems wise beyond her years ... I'm sure she'll be around next week, and I hope Simon gives her a more youthful song to do.

10:21pm
Melanie is another one I like a lot. Good voice, but I'm not sure there's anything particularly distinctive about her yet. We'll have to see where she takes it tonight.

10:19pm
Tiah is adorable as well. Everyone on this show is so good-looking. Except Dexter, but he's gone now so my statement remains true. Simon is being such a hater tonight, dayum.

10:18pm
Her performance just got uber pixelated on my HD TV. I don't think my television can handle this LOL.

10:18pm
I think this is an awful song choice for Tiah. It makes her sound like she's off-key, for one.

10:17pm
This show has been overusing Adele as background music, man. Don't ruin "Someone Like You" for me.

10:16pm
Tiah already looks like a stah.

10:12pm
Drew is just so effing cute.

10:11pm
Wow, Nicole is not criticizing Simon's song choice.

10:10pm
I think Nicole will have criticisms about Simon's song choice for Drew.

10:09pm
Drew always sounds good, but I think at some point her Sarah McLachlan yodelly thing might get a little old for some people. On the upside, her bangs look great.

10:08pm
WTF, NOW they start showing behind-the-scenes video with Brian Friedman? Suspect. I love the girl, but still ... suspect.

10:07pm
Drew's up. Eek.

10:05pm
Have to give little Rachel major props, though, she gave it her all and it was a very good performance.

10:04pm
Simon's dead eyes tell me he already knows he's sending her home at the end of the night.

10:04pm
I really do not like Rachel Crow at all, but she looks cute as hell. And she's doing Justin Bieber. This is nothing special, still.

10:04pm
That's what happens when you take 6 minute commercial breaks.

10:03pm
10:03pm? Wow, they went WAY over. How did they think they could fit this all in under 2 hours?

9:57pm
L.A. Reid doesn't "get" Simone. Everyone is using Simone to slam Simon.

9:56pm
This song doesn't really show off her voice, but I'm not even really listening, I'm so mesmerized by her showmanship.

9:55pm
For serious, this girl would probably put on an amazing show.

9:54pm
Dayum, Simone's got "it," and she hasn't even started singing yet.

9:53pm
Oh snap, Simon has to get rid of two girls tonight. That's not good for little Drew. Rachel can go home ... there's something I really don't like about her. I can't believe I'm saying that about a 13-year-old but, eh.

9:48pm
Oh, little Drew is in the last group. I always take a special liking to the girls and she's the only girl I feel strongly about, so I guess you could say she's my favorite contestant.

9:48pm
THANK YOU, NICOLE. Dexter was such a risk and not even that good.

9:47pm
This spur-of-the-moment decision making really isn't the best idea. The producers need to rethink this.

9:45pm
Dexter, please send Dexter home.

9:45pm
"Stirring" is the right word for Josh's performance.

9:43pm
He's sounding a little off-key, but so far I think this is probably the best performance of the night so far. Sounds SO good.

9:41pm
Nicole is really disorganized tonight. Maybe that's what's rubbing Simon the wrong way? I'm excited for Josh. I like him lots.

9:38pm
Who is allowing Justin Timberlake to continue acting? Boo.

9:36pm
I don't like Nicole Scherzinger, but why is Simon picking on her so much tonight?

9:32pm
Stacy Francis is beautiful. And we know she's a great singer already, so ... what else is there to say?

source: TheXFactorUSA.com

9:31pm
Ouch, Simon just completely ripped Nicole as a judge and didn't give her any justification for doing it.

9:27pm
I like this song, but they're totally recycling the songs done on "X Factor UK" last season. LeRoy sounds okay. Good, but not out of this world amazing or anything.

9:27pm
LeRoy is hot for a 60-year-old. Is it wrong for me to say that? I hope Jordan Knight looks that good in 19 years. I'm not counting on it.

source: TheXFactorUSA.com

9:26pm
I was wrong. The commercial break was only four minutes long this time.

9:22pm
Another five minute commercial break after only five minutes of show after a five minute commercial break? My patience is wearing thin.

9:21pm
You know there's something wrong when a judge says, "I'm so proud of you ... you remembered your lyrics." C'mon, guys. He wasn't even singing, he was ... hollering.

9:18pm
No, just no. Didn't one of the New Kids say "I Kissed A Girl" wouldn't have the same impact if a man had sung it? This is having a negative, negative impact on me. Then again, so did the original song.

9:17pm
I don't "get" Dexter. I think maybe Nicole is the only one who does.

9:17pm
Are the commercial breaks really 5 minutes long?

9:12pm
Ouch. Steve Jones trying to cut Paula off while she was giving the Brewer Boys some words of encouragement. Maybe he should just keep his mouth shut and stand there and look pretty?

9:11pm
Booo. I called it.

9:10pm
Oh, damn. Don't send the Brewer Boys home ...

9:08pm
So ... who's going home tonight? I missed the first group performance, but you know I'm hoping inTENsity goes home. They probably won't, because of the girl in the red coat and because they're kids. Is Paula really about to cry already?

9:07pm
Wow, L.A. Reid's compliment was HUGE.

9:07pm
I happen to like the brunette the best.

9:06pm
They also sound amazing together.

9:05pm
One advantage Lakoda Rayne or whatever their name is has is is that they are all beautiful girls.

9:01pm
I also feel like putting TEN children together into a group was a major copout on the show's part. Only a few of them are ever going to really sing or gain any notoriety anyway. Poor Paula who has to deal with them. Nice "Footloose" plug here, heh.

9:00pm
Something about inTENsity in their previous appearances really rubbed me the wrong way, so no, I don't like them. One of the lead girls acts WAY too sexy for her 14 years. She's the one wearing the red coat today.

8:57pm
By the way, I heard Howie Dorough of the Backstreet Boys is opening up for Britney Spears in South America. How the EFF did this happen? Howie, of all people??? Wow. He had all of, like, five lines in Backstreet Boys songs between 1995 and 2005.

8:54pm
The younger one reminds me of Frankie Jonas.

8:53pm
New Kids on the Block just got a shoutout from Nicole Scherzinger. So did Paula Abdul. I think the older Brewer Boy is cuuuute as well, I'll be honest. Maybe not so much in the photo below.

8:52pm
I wasn't sure where the Brewer Boys' cover of "Rich Girl"/"Faith" was going, but now I'm loving it! This bluegrassy sound is pretty different from other stuff out there.

8:50pm
I heard rumors that they're trying to get rid of Steve Jones because he doesn't have enough personality ... to some, I'm sure he's one big reason to watch the show.

8:46pm
I'm really not good at multitasking. While I was checking on my cookies, I forgot about my bread and my bread sat in the oven for 7 minutes longer than they should've. I missed the first group, which I think was my favorite. I like The Brewer Boys, though ... not because they're great artists, but because they're cute.

8:36pm
I knew it! Just checked on my cookies. They are definitely not cookies. They're more like ... scones. Scary looking ones.

8:33pm
I always forget that I shouldn't do these live blogs in reverse chronological order, because they will make no sense when the event is over. Duh.

8:33pm
How many are being eliminated this week? 5? I think Phillip's going home right now.

8:30pm
I've just now realized that the U.S. version of this show is showing less of the behind-the-scenes stuff the UK version shows. I'm not sure it's because they're still in the judges' elimination rounds, but in the UK version, there were videos of them consulting with their mentors, with Brian Friedman (hottie), and comments from the other judges.

8:29pm
Marcus Canty ... okay, so far the best vocal of the guys, in my opinion.

8:28pm
It smells like Thanksgiving in my house!

8:24pm
I'm scared about what these pumpkin chocolate chip cookies are gonna come out looking like. They were oblong on the cookie sheet.

8:23pm
For the record, my poor laptop Jordan has taken more abuse than most of my electronics since my laptop Bastardini, who I hated anyway. (I spilled chicken noodle soup over Bastardini's keyboard.)

8:22pm
Phillip also kinda looks like a less hot version of Benjamin Bratt.

8:21pm
This song is NOT doing it for me. I think one of L.A. Reid's concerns was that Phillip would be doing his jazzy thing every week. This isn't a jazzy take on "I'm A Believer," but it's also not not jazzy.

8:20pm
Phillip Lomax is nice to look at ... I think maybe he is what David Archuleta would be like if he were a little looser. And a lesser singer. ;)

8:14pm
Paula just said Chris had a genuine "cutefulness." I rest my case.

8:12pm
The stage seems to be overwhelming Chris. Maybe next week he'll feel more comfortable. He's got such a pretty voice.

8:11pm
I love me some Chris Rene, but the lighting for this is ridiculous.

8:10pm
Simon's comment was too much, too soon, I thought. And I see Paula's back to her nonsensical comments again. Ah, home. Oh, I forgot about Chris Rene. I'm also Team Chris.

8:08pm
He's got the charisma to pull it off, though.

8:07pm
He's 14? He looks tiny and I honestly can't tell whether he's talented or not, but this performance is kinda fun.

8:06pm
I wasn't feeling this Astro kid in the auditions, but let's see.

8:04pm
Sorry I'm a little late ... it's pumpkin night at my place. Pumpkin chocolate chip bread and cookies coming soon.
