A song you clean house to / A song by an artist you used to love but now are at least a little ashamed of

Monday, November 07, 2011

Well, I do clean house, but I don't usually listen to music while doing it. However, if I were to listen to music, it'd probably be something really upbeat. And when I look for upbeat music, I usually look to Ms. Kylie Minogue.

But I think music by Carole King-esque people might cut it, too. I'm thinking "Fools" by Diane Birch.

Since I barely even answered that question, I'm tacking on the next question to this week's "Music Monday" response.

Hmm ... artists I used to like who I am now ashamed of. I can probably count them on one hand:
Aaron Carter, Hilary Duff. I feel like I've written about both of them and their music extensively before, but I'll go ahead with it anyway. I'm even going to use different songs for both (I previously said I'd liked "Saturday Night" by Aaron and "Come Clean" by Hilary)!

I don't know what caused me to even think Aaron was remotely decent as a singer back then. He just sounds whiny to me now. I guess he was cute in his own Carteresque way then. Now? Not so much. Or not at all. My mother once told me she thought Aaron would grow up to be better looking than his big brother Nick. I can safely (and smugly) say that that is not the case. (At least I don't think so.)

To be perfectly honest, most of the songs on "Aaron's Party (Come Get It)" are sickeningly catchy and he was young enough on the album to have gotten away with his limited vocal abilities. "Tell Me What You Want" is so cute, and I think I may have liked "Real Good Time."

Actually, I think he did an okay job at this televised program called "The Disco Ball," a 30-year celebration of disco music. He did Andy Gibb's "For So Long":

As for Hilary, her music is fine -- it's her voice that is not at all great. I like a lot of her songs, including "The Getaway," "Fly," "No Work, All Play."

Here's "The Getaway" ... if only they'd given the song to someone with a less annoying voice. Her voice is nearly tolerable on this track, though.

And just for fun, who remembers that Hilary Duff and Aaron Carter dated? And that Aaron claimed (many years after they'd gone their separate ways) that she was his true love? And who's married with a bun in the oven now?

I feel so old. Especially since I was already too old to have concerned myself with Lizzie McGuire when it was actually on-air.
