Listening to ... "Wide Awake," Katy Perry

I've been on some sort of female empowerment musical trip lately ... I guess I'm slowly coming out of my vacation blues. I think it's much more than that, because on top of having to focus on studying Mandarin again, I'm also missing my friends tremendously. It's hard to say when I'm going to see the friends who live clear on the other side of the world again, you know?

So I've been listening to a lot of Katy Perry. Partially because one of my friends and I went to see Katy Perry's documentary concert movie in Sydney (I know, who would've thought I'd ever pay to see that?) and the songs just got caught in my head. And partially because some of her songs are just what I need right now -- a little sad, but mostly uplifting.

I suppose "Wide Awake" isn't the most uplifting of songs, but I just love everything about it. Its melancholy lyrics paired with a lilt in her voice and in the melody that gives the song a hopeful tone. Sometimes what you need is just to know that someone out there is down, too. What can I say? Misery loves company!

I'd post the official music video, but it creeps the hell out of me and I don't want to make you suffer in the same way as I did.
