Today is International Women's Day. International Women's Day has been celebrated in some form or another since 1909, and originated in New York City by the Socialist Party. The United Nations declared March 8th as the official observance of the day in 1977, and since 1996, the U.N. has given each year's celebration a theme. The theme for 2016 is gender equality, particularly in regards to the wage gap.

Since starting my YouTube channel in mid-2013, I've been wanting to upload a video for International Women's Day. Although my channel focuses mainly on budget and natural beauty products and reviews and has little to do with sociology or economics, I have rather strong feelings about makeup and its intersection with self-confidence and self-image. So many times I have heard girls and women say that they feel they can't leave the house without makeup on, or that they feel "naked" or "vulnerable" without makeup. Though I feel strongly about this, I rarely talk about this topic because I feel that I am privileged to have good-enough skin and have no right to tell others how to feel about themselves.

But in thinking about a way to convey my ideas while still considering how others may feel, I sort of played the devil's advocate: I thought about how it came to be that I don't wear makeup. And I realized that my decision to not wear makeup or learn how to do makeup was, yes, in part because I'm lazy and don't want to "waste" time in the morning to do it. But it also goes back to something a little more serious than that -- something that virtually all people are affected by, and that's someone else's standards or expectations. I thought International Women's Day would be an appropriate occasion to address these feelings.

So after 2.5 years, I've finally gotten a video up that I feel captures what I want to say and how I feel. I hope you'll have a look, and I hope you find it meaningful in some way. Happy International Women's Day!
