The xx #MusicMonday

The xx is a dream pop/electronica band and currently consists of three members: original members Oliver Sim and Romy Madley Croft (both 15 when they started the band), and Jamie Smith -- who himself is a producer, DJ and remix artist. They formed in London in 2005 and, more specifically, at Elliott School where Hot Chip, The Maccabees, Pierce Brosnan all got their start. The band's music -- and their most recent album "Coexist" in particular -- is more dampened and darker than the label "dream pop" may have you believe. Sim's vocals adds a slightly sinister edge to their music while Madley Croft's voice adds balance to Sim's, grounding the direction of the music, though neither of their voices gives off a particularly ethereal feel. Maybe that's where Jamie Smith's beat-making comes in.

The xx, more than a lot of other bands, feels like a truly collaborative effort where each member is indispensable. And to think that Oliver Sim and Romy Madley Croft had the foresight at just 15 to put the band together. The music isn't groundbreaking, but it fills a niche that calls for consistently mellow, after hours house music ... good for those wee hours after everyone's gone home but the bottle's not yet finished.

I prefer the songs on The xx's 2012 album, "Coexist" to that of their 2009 album "XX," so all of the following songs are from "Coexist."
